Ski by Moonlight (Ski Nocturne)
Friday nights at Grand Signal (additional cost to daily/weekly pass)
Enjoy an extra three hours' worth of skiing as Crans-Montana's Grand Signal slope is lit up on Friday nights for the popular ski nocturne. Although the romantic title suggests a skiing expedition in the dark, the truth is far brighter (and doubtless much safer). The piste is illuminated by large stadium-style floodlights and skiers can enjoy an extra few hours of downhill pleasure. Without the light of the Alpine sun, temperatures for night skiing are much lower than during the day, so wear an extra sweater.
Crans-Montana Ballooning Meeting
January 2009
The popular ski resort of Crans-Montana holds this annual gathering of ballooning enthusiasts, who come in droves to fly their craft over the Alps and Lac Léman. Dozens of multicoloured hot air balloons depart every morning from the Lac Grenon, a short walk east of Crans-Montana village. For those who aren't early risers, they are visible floating through the crisp air until the evening.
La Foulée Blanche Cross-Country Skiing Race
January 2009
Open to skiers of all ages and abilities, the Foulée Blanche is one of the most popular events in the Swiss Alps. The cross-country race consists of laps around a snow-covered lake (the Etang Long) and a golf course. Depending on their category (Women, Juniors, Seniors or Veterans), skiers cover between five and 15 kilometres. The event is open to all and many holidaymakers also take part. The emphasis is on participation as opposed to serious competition and there are plenty of activities surrounding the race. Non-skiers are welcome to stand along the course and cheer participants on, regardless of the weather.
